About Us Hero

Learn more about the Sharai Mukonoweshuro Literary Foundation and our mission to promote Zimbabwean literature and culture.

The Sharai Mukonoweshuro Literary Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and empowering Zimbabweans through the power of the written word. We are committed to promoting reading from the early years through high school and nurturing the art of writing and publishing in English, Shona, and Ndebele.

We envision a world where Zimbabwean culture and heritage flourish without boundaries through literature. By bridging the past, present, and future, our foundation creates spaces for storytelling, education, and cultural exchange.

Our Story

Inspired by Sharai Mukoweshuro, the first woman to have a novel published in the Shona language, our foundation honors her deep love of literature and passion for Zimbabwean culture. It was established to address two critical needs:

Fostering a Love for Reading

We design and deliver literacy programs for pre-school to high school students. By partnering with libraries, schools, and community organizations, we provide enriching experiences that cultivate lifelong readers.

Writing

Inspiring the Next Generation of Writers

Through workshops, writing competitions, mentorship, and a range of resources, we empower aspiring writers to share their stories in English, Shona, and Ndebele. Our goal is to nurture creative talent and promote the publishing of works that reflect our diverse cultural narratives.

Writing

Our Impact

By supporting both readers and writers, we help Zimbabweans around the globe connect with their shared history, present experiences, and future aspirations. Our initiatives break through cultural and geographical boundaries, fostering a global community united by language, creativity, and a deep sense of identity.

How We Are Organized

We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit in the United States and are in the process of registering as a Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) in Zimbabwe. Our Zimbabwean branch will play a critical role in collaborating closely with local partners to carry out our mission.
