Her Story

Sharai Mukonoweshuro was born Sharai Hove on the 29th of December in 1939. She was a pioneering figure in Zimbabwean literature, becoming the first woman to have a novel published in the Shona language.

Her social realistic novels tackled complex themes including domestic relationships, cultural traditions, moral dilemmas, and the triumph of hope over adversity. Through her writing, she gave voice to the experiences of rural Zimbabwean women, presenting their stories with dignity, compassion, and profound insight.

Mukonoweshuro's work continues to inspire generations of writers, particularly women, who cite her influence on their literary journeys. Her novels remain important cultural artifacts that bridge traditional and modern Zimbabwean narratives.
